Nourished works with its default settings, but you can adjust its gameplay, display, and food-classification behavior. Most settings are available through the Nourished configuration screen; the config files can also be edited directly.
🎮 Opening the Configuration Screen
Open Nourished’s configuration screen from the game’s mod list. Cloth Config is required.
Some settings apply to the current server or game, while HUD and Diet Screen layout options are client-side.
📁 Configuration Files
Nourished uses separate files for common gameplay settings, client display settings, and additional data:
| File or folder | Purpose |
|---|---|
config/nourished-common.toml |
Common gameplay settings, such as modules, decay, thresholds, effects, and food behavior |
config/nourished-client.toml |
Client display settings for the HUD, Diet Screen, and related panels |
config/nourished/ |
Additional JSON configuration and generated data, including raw-food settings and scanner configuration |
Use the in-game configuration screen where possible. Before editing files manually, close the game and make a backup.
⚙️ Gameplay Settings
The common configuration includes options for:
- Enabling or disabling nutrient decay and food-source application
- Turning nutrition effects, HUD elements, tooltips, notifications, and calorie tracking on or off
- Adjusting nutrient decay, thresholds, and effect behavior
- Configuring raw-food penalties and gut health
- Controlling whether light or heavy foods can provide nutrition at full hunger
- Enabling or disabling sleep bonuses, synergies, and milestones
The default nutrient groups are fruits, vegetables, proteins, grains, and dairy. Their definitions and effects can be customized; see Datapack Support.
🖥️ HUD & Diet Screen
Client settings control the HUD and Diet Screen appearance, including layout, visibility, sizing, and display options.
Default keybinds:
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| H | Enter HUD edit mode |
| N | Open the Diet Screen |
You can change these keybinds in Minecraft's Controls settings. For panel layout and display details, see HUD & Display.
🍽️ Food Classification
Nourished uses food data, item tags, compatibility data, and classification inference to determine which nutrients foods provide. Datapacks can add or override classifications without changing the mod.
If food classification looks wrong:
- Check whether the item is covered by a datapack override or relevant item tags.
- Use Nourished’s classification and diagnostic commands to inspect the item.
- After changing datapack data, reload datapacks with
/reload. - If cached classification results are stale, run
/nourished invalidatecache.
Do not delete scanner_spec.json as a routine troubleshooting step. It contains scanner configuration, not simply a disposable cache.
For help adding or changing classifications, see Datapack Support and Community Tags.
🔒 Server Configuration
Common gameplay settings affect the server’s nutrition system. Client display settings affect only the local player's interface.
Modpack authors can use datapacks to provide shared data and server-side rules. See Datapack Support and Server Administration.
🔧 Troubleshooting
Food has the wrong nutrient classification
- Check datapack overrides and item tags.
- Inspect the item with Nourished’s diagnostic commands.
- Reload datapacks after changing datapack files.
- Invalidate cached classifications if results remain stale.
The HUD is missing or misplaced
- Check that the HUD is enabled in the Nourished configuration.
- Press H to enter edit mode and reposition it.
- Review the client-side HUD visibility and layout settings.
A setting does not seem to apply
- Confirm whether it is a server/common setting or a client-only display setting.
- For datapack changes, run
/reload. - Some settings may require reconnecting or restarting; follow any notes shown with that setting.
