Item Editor: Item Sources

Design notes Updated 7 Oct 2026 13 min read

Summary

Add a Sources section to the Item Editor showing where the selected item can be obtained.

Details

Display known acquisition methods for the selected item, such as:

  • Grown from

  • Dropped by

  • Fishing

  • Chest/loot

  • Created by another recipe

  • Processed by a machine

  • Added by a specific mod

Where possible, sources should be clickable and navigate to the relevant item/recipe.

Goal

Make the Item Editor useful for understanding how an item is obtained without leaving the editor.

Item Editor: Recipe Variants

Summary

Expand the existing 3-D recipe preview to support multiple recipes for the selected item.

Details

If an item has multiple recipes, allow the user to switch between them.

Example:

  • Crafting Table

  • Cooking Pot

  • Cutting Board

  • Monster Cooker

The recipe ingredients and 3-D processing/crafting visualization should update when the selected recipe changes.

Goal

Make the existing recipe visualization useful for heavily-modded environments where an item may have multiple ways to be produced.

Item Editor: Nutrition Preview

Summary

Add a dedicated nutrition information section for the selected item.

Details

Display the Nourished values currently associated with the item, including applicable:

  • Nutrient groups

  • Calories

  • Other nutrition values

  • Variety-related values where applicable

The display should use the same formatting and colors already used elsewhere in Nourished.

Goal

Allow users to understand an item's nutritional contribution while editing it.

Item Editor: Consumption Preview

Summary

Add a Preview Consumption feature that shows how eating the selected item would affect the player's current nutrition state.

Details

Display:

  • Current nutrient values

  • Values after consuming the item

  • Calorie change

  • Balance state before/after

  • Potential effects

  • Diminishing-return impact where applicable

Example:

Current:
Protein: 62%

After eating:
Protein: 74%

Balance:
Balanced → High

Goal

Let users understand the gameplay consequences of an item's configuration without actually consuming it.

Item Editor: Recipe Nutrition Calculation

Summary

Show how the nutritional values of a crafted food relate to its ingredients.

Details

For applicable recipes, display the resulting nutritional contribution alongside the ingredients.

Example:

Steak Sandwich

  • Protein: 42%

  • Grains: 18%

  • Vegetables: 12%

  • Calories: 580

Include an indicator that these values are calculated from the recipe ingredients when applicable.

Goal

Make it easier to understand why a crafted food has its current nutritional profile.

Item Editor: Mod Information

Summary

Add basic mod/source information for the selected item.

Details

Display:

  • Mod name

  • Mod version when available

  • Namespace

  • Registry ID

Example:

Dungeon's Delight

dungeonsdelight:monster_meat

Goal

Make the editor more useful for modpack developers and troubleshooting without requiring external tools.

Item Editor: Technical Information

Summary

Add an expandable Advanced section containing technical information about the selected item.

Details

Potential information:

  • Registry ID

  • Namespace

  • Mod ID

  • Item tags

  • Nourished group

  • Vanilla food values

  • Saturation

  • Other relevant Minecraft/Nourished properties

The section should be collapsed by default so normal users aren't overwhelmed.

Goal

Provide useful developer/modpack information without cluttering the normal editor experience.

Item Editor: Item Tags

Summary

Display tags associated with the selected item.

Details

Show applicable Minecraft/modded tags in a dedicated section.

Examples:

#forge:fruits

#c:foods

#minecraft:logs

Where practical, clicking a tag should allow the user to view/filter other items matching that tag.

Goal

Expose the data-driven relationships that Nourished already relies on.

Item Editor: Favorites

Summary

Allow users to favorite frequently accessed items.

Details

Add a favorite/star control to items.

Provide a way to filter the Item Editor to:

Favorites

Favorites should persist between sessions.

Goal

Make large modpacks easier to manage by allowing frequently edited items to be quickly accessed.

Item Editor: Recently Viewed

Summary

Track recently viewed items in the Item Editor.

Details

Maintain a small history of recently selected items.

Example:

  • Steak

  • Bread

  • Steak Sandwich

  • Carrot

  • Apple

Allow users to quickly return to recently viewed items.

Goal

Reduce navigation friction when configuring multiple related foods.

Item Editor: Advanced Item Search

Summary

Improve Item Editor search beyond simple item-name matching.

Details

Allow filtering/searching by applicable Item Editor properties, such as:

  • Item name

  • Mod ID

  • Nutrient group

  • Tags

  • Calories

  • Modified state

  • Excluded state

  • Foods with recipes

The system should remain focused on finding items to edit, rather than becoming a general-purpose nutrition search engine.

Goal

Make the editor practical when hundreds or thousands of food items are present.

Item Editor: Recipe Dependency Graph

Summary

Add an optional visual representation of an item's recipe dependencies.

Details

Allow users to expand an item into its ingredient relationships.

Example:

Wheat → Flour → Bread → Sandwich

And:

Milk → Cheese → Sandwich

Selecting a connected item should navigate to that item in the editor.

This should be an optional/advanced view rather than part of the default editor layout.

Goal

Provide a way to understand complex recipe chains without leaving Nourished.

Item Editor: 3-D Item Inspection

Summary

Expand the existing 3-D item visualization into an interactive item inspection viewport.

Details

Allow users to:

  • Rotate the item

  • Zoom the item

  • Inspect its model

  • View the associated crafting/processing machine

The existing 3-D recipe visualization should remain integrated with this system.

Goal

Make the visual item/recipe area feel like an actual inspection viewport rather than a static preview.

Item Editor: Configuration Preview

Summary

Add a preview/test mode for editing Nourished item configuration.

Details

Allow the user to modify applicable values and immediately see the resulting configuration.

Potential values include:

  • Nutrient values

  • Calories

  • Group assignments

  • Diminishing returns

  • Nourished processing behavior

  • Other item-specific configuration

Provide an explicit Apply action.

Goal

Turn the Item Editor into the primary authoring interface for Nourished item configuration.

Item Editor: Reset to Default

Summary

Add reset functionality for customized item configuration.

Details

Provide:

  • Per-value reset

  • Per-item reset

  • Optional reset-all functionality

Resetting should restore the item's detected/default Nourished configuration.

Goal

Make experimentation safe and prevent users from becoming stuck with accidental configuration changes.

Item Editor: Modified Item Indicators

Summary

Add visual indicators showing which items have custom Nourished configuration.

Details

Items with changes should display a subtle indicator, such as:

  • Pencil icon

  • Dot

  • Modified badge

Also consider an editor filter:

Modified Items

Goal

Make customized content immediately distinguishable from default data.

Item Editor: Default vs Current Comparison

Summary

Add a comparison view showing an item's default values alongside its current customized values.

Details

Example:

Value Default Current
Protein 0.35 0.50
Calories 80 100
Fruit 1.00 1.00

Only changed values could optionally be highlighted.

Goal

Make configuration changes transparent and easy to verify.

Item Editor: Bulk Editing

Summary

Allow multiple items to be selected and edited simultaneously.

Details

Users should be able to select multiple items and apply compatible configuration changes to all of them.

Example:

Apple + Pear + Peach + Cherry

→ Set nutrient group to Fruits

Potential bulk operations should only expose properties that can safely be applied to all selected items.

Goal

Make large-scale modpack configuration practical without manually editing hundreds of foods one at a time.
